The international research center for renewable energy in Güssing develops new and efficient technologies to transform the regional resources and residues into the energy that we need in our daily life. Those are electricity, heat, cool, gas, liquid fuels, hydrogen. For further development into series production many pilot- and demonstration plants were built in the ecoEnergyregion in Güssing. Only through long-time operation it is now possible to multiply those plants.
The national and international scientists working in Güssing agree that the transition from regional resources and residues into the above mentioned forms of energy is the most effective, if the fixed carbon of the materials is transformed into gaseous carbon. With the resulting so-called product gas the further refinement into the different forms of energy is possible.
Center piece of our technologies is the thermal gasification plant, developed by the Technical University of Vienna under the guidance of Professor Hermann Hofbauer and first built in Güssing. With this plant it's possible to use a big scale of municipal resources - from wooden residues to sorted waste. Especially urban areas offer a wide variety of such resources.
Highlight of this technology is the polygeneration, the simultaneous generation of multiple forms of energy (electricity, heat, cool, synthetic natural gas, synthetic liquid fuels, hydrogen). With this technology existing urban infrastructures can be used to transport the energy to the customer.
One thing was very important for the scientist during their research activities: a high efficiency level of the plants. That's why classic systems like combustion are hugely surpassed. As a consequence we have a system that can transform many different input materials into several forms of energy at high efficiency and at a very high environmental compatibility.
To complete the system we use known technologies as photovoltaic, wind or biological gasification. Thus it's possible to significantly reduce the import of international, fossil resources in cities and obtain added value.
